When Hard Work Pays Off

Just a quick note from poolside in Puerto Vallarta.

I’ve been thinking about you and I and the busy people we are.  The question that has been running through my head is, “How do you know when to quit working so hard?” If you enjoy what you do as much as I do, it doesn’t feel like hard work.  This can be a blessing and a curse.  New projects come up, opportunities arise and you can quickly find yourself out of balance.

One of my business strategies is to take a vacation with my husband somewhere warm every February. Not only does this reward us for work well done it relieves us from the grey skies of Portland for a bit.  Warmer climes have a slower pace. When the sun is shining and there are so many interesting things to do it kicks me into a different mindset.

As I reflect and take the time to view the sunset, feel the breeze on my face, and ponder the blessings in my life, I thank God for you and for the “hard” work I am blessed with opportunity to do.

I’d love to hear how you make sure you don’t work too hard for too long and how you reward yourself for work well done.

I set aside Thursday mornings for a date with my wife. Our son is at school so we have several hours to ourselves when we can reconnect. I also have a rule not to work on weekends and try to close work down by 5pm for family time. I found long ago that I actually get more done in less time if I set tight bounds around work time. It forces me to be efficient.
